Peer reviewed research on group therapy is exceptionally positive.  Major literature reviews of the research identify common outcomes.  The Therapy Tree  take an evidence research driven based approach to mental well being. Assessing what works in improving mental wellness is notoriously difficult (see here). Despite concerns over comparing apples to oranges - is this group of burnt-out executives really comparable to a group of burnt-out parents, or, is therapist x in London really delivering a similar service as therapist y in Melbourne, there are several points of general agreement across published research papers.

  • Most (e.g. 85%) people report their mental well-being is better after attending group therapy than those not receiving help.

  • Group therapy tends to show as good or if not better long term outcomes than one-to-one therapy.
